null Kingston Access Bus to eliminate fares for support persons

November 12, 2013 -

Kingston Access Bus is eliminating fares for support persons in the new year.

"This is another way to reduce barriers to transportation for people with disabilities," says Trevor Fray, Executive Director of Kingston Access Services, a non-profit charitable organization supported by the City of Kingston. Kingston Access Services operates the Kingston Access Bus and Kingston Area Patient Shuttle Service.  He notes that the change is being made in accordance with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act (Integrated Accessibility Standards 191-11).

Passengers who use Kingston Access Services may now apply for a Support Person Pass, which will allow one person who supports them to ride with them for free effective January 1, 2014.  Any additional person riding with the Kingston Access Bus passenger must pay the fare. A support person may be a paid professional, volunteer, family member or friend to the person who requires their assistance for communication, mobility, personal care or medical needs.

The one-way fare for Kingston Access Bus passengers will be $2.75 as of January 1, 2014.

Passengers can obtain a Support Person Application form from a Kingston Access Bus driver, or by contacting Kingston Access Services at 613-542-2512.

Kingston Access Bus will also be expanding its office hours in the new year to facilitate booking of this service by people with disabilities.
