null Kingston preparing to open municipal marinas to seasonal boaters by late May

May 14, 2020 -

The Provincial Government announced today that marinas that are ready to open may do so starting May 16. While the City has been taking steps to prepare to open both the Confederation Basin Marina and Portsmouth Olympic Harbour marina, these sites will not be ready to open on May 16. The City is working to open the marinas as soon as possible, and is targeting late May.

“Under usual circumstances, marina preparations are typically a 6-week process. We have been preparing our marinas over the past two weeks with full time City staff deployed from other areas in Recreation & Leisure Services. We need more time to properly train our redeployed staff for health and safety protocols and to get the docks ready. The patience of the boating community is appreciated while we work to get ready to safely welcome back our seasonal marina guests,” says Lacricia Turner, Director, Recreation & Leisure Services.

Although some limited annual maintenance work began on April 30, work to prepare the marinas for the 2020 boating season only began fully on May 4 when the provincial government lifted emergency order restrictions on marina operations. Dock repair and replacement, deep-cleaning of amenities and installation of appropriate protective barriers where required continues and will be completed prior to the City welcoming back boaters.

Initial capacity at the two municipal marinas will be limited to seasonal boaters only; with reduced availability to allow for physical distancing and ensure safe operations for boaters and staff at the marinas. Seasonal boaters are those who book a slip for the entire season.

Docks for day and weekend use will not be immediately available upon opening. The public boat launch at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour will remain closed to the public until the marina opens.

Marina opening preparations are being coordinated in cooperation with the Ontario Boating Association, and KFL&A Public Health is advising the City on physical distancing and health guidelines for staff and boaters.

In the meantime, seasonal boaters may make reservations for seasonal slips at Confederation Basin Marina or Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. Seasonal permits can be reserved by emailing ConfederationBasinMarina@cityofkingston.ca or PortsmouthOlympicHarbour@cityofkingston.ca, or by calling 613-546-4291 ext. 1823. City staff anticipate a high volume of inquiries and ask for resident cooperation as this situation develops.
