Sometime on December 10, someone in the city boarded a bus and took the four-millionth trip this year on Kingston Transit.

The 2013 route realignment and the addition of the Express 1 route have led to higher-than-expected increases in ridership, helping Kingston Transit hit the milestone four-million mark. 

"This is huge. It's fantastic to see Kingston residents riding the buses, whether it's to commute to work, school or for recreation," says Jeremy DaCosta, transit manager. "Residents see the great value we offer and are leaving their personal vehicles in their driveways. They know that riding with us saves time and money and is a great way to travel. Four million rides on public transit in one year represents a significant number of vehicle trips taken off of Kingston roadways. It reduces congestion and the demand for parking spaces."

Phase 1 of Kingston Transit's redevelopment plan included the launch of the first express route in September 2013 and a re-alignment of existing routes. The changes have proved popular.

By December 31, 2014, Kingston Transit expects it will achieve a 12 per cent increase in ridership over 2013 – a 7 per cent increase over its annual target of 5 per cent. This is a significant increase when compared to previous ridership growth which has averaged about 2.5 per cent a year over each of the past five years.

The second phase of the redevelopment plan rolls out in May 2015 and includes two new express routes, a number of route changes and realignments.

  • Express 2 will provide service to Kingston East with direct service between St. Lawrence Business Park, Greenwood Park, Rideau Town Centre, Highway 15, the Royal Military College, downtown, Queen's University and Kingston General Hospital. It will provide 15-minute service weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 30-minute service evening and weekends.
  • Express 3 will complete the express route network for the west end and strengthen the availability of service along Gardiners Road, Bath Road, downtown, to the King's Crossing Centre and Kingslake Plaza at Highway 401 via Division Street. Fifteen-minute service will be offered during peak times and 30-minute service during off-peak hours and weekends.
