Kingston Transit offers free trips across the La Salle Causeway during sidewalk closure
April 24, 2019 -
Kingston Transit is providing free trips across the La Salle Causeway during existing transit service hours while the Ontario Street sidewalk between The Tragically Hip Way and the east side of the Causeway is closed.
Pedestrians heading east towards Royal Military College can use the bus stop located at Ontario Street (east side) in front of the Wolfe Island Ferry Terminal. Pedestrians heading west toward the downtown can use the bus stop located on Highway 2 (north side) at Royal Military College/Fort Henry Drive. The buses and transit stops are fully accessible.
Signs will be placed around the closure and at the transit stops. Plan how transit will be a part of your trip using Google Transit at www.KingstonTransit.ca/Tripplanner and track the real time arrival of their bus using Transit App, Google Maps, or Moovit.
Kingston Transit will offer the free rides across the Causeway until an alternate route for pedestrians through this area has been established.
It remains unsafe to use this sidewalk as sections of the wall around Fort Frontenac are in need urgent structural repair. The City and the Department of National Defence are working to create an alternate route for pedestrians that will allow the wall to be repaired in sections.
It is expected that existing vehicles lanes will shift to the west during the first phase of the closure and a protected pedestrian pathway will added to the east side of the existing roadway. More information about this alternate pedestrian pathway will be provided once the details are finalized between the City of Kingston and Department of National Defence.
Media inquiries about the structural safety and repair plan for the wall can be directed to Captain Jeremy Mathews, public affairs officer at firstname.lastname@example.org.
