Lyric Chosen for Market Square Stone to Commemorate August 20 The Tragically Hip Concert

The votes are in and Kingston has chosen the lyric "Everybody was in it from miles around…" from The Tragically Hip song Blow at High Dough to be displayed on a commemorative stone in Springer Market Square.

"August 20, The Tragically Hip Day in Kingston, is a night Kingstonians and Canadians will always remember," said Mayor Bryan Paterson. "Thank you to all those who voted on the lyric to be displayed on the commemorative stone, a physical showcase of our pride and love for our iconic hometown boys."

More than 11,000 votes were cast.

Here is the breakdown:

  • Total votes: 11,280 (3,580 were local)
  • Votes for option 1 ("We danced the sidewalk clean"): 3,300  (870 were local)
  • Votes for option 2 ("Everybody was in it from miles around"): 7,982 (2,710 were local)

City staff will now be working to finalize the material, design and commemoration location of the stone in consultation with the First Capital Place Advisory Committee. The stone to commemorate the August 20 Tragically Hip concert will now read:

"Everybody was in it from miles around…"
