Mayor Congratulates Kingston Olympians

February 25, 2014 -

Today the Mayor congratulated the Kingston Olympians who competed in the 2014 XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi Russia.

"Kingston is so proud of our local Olympians," said Mayor Mark Gerretsen. "We have a long history of athletes competing in the summer and winter Olympics. These athletes continue to inspire us with their dedication to their sports and competing for our country."

This year four local athletes competed as part of the largest Canadian Winter Olympic team sent to the Winter Olympics. Those athletes were:

  • Genevieve Lacasse, Gold in Women's Hockey
  • Jayna Hefford, Gold in Women's Hockey
  • Gillian Apps, Gold in Women's Hockey
  • Mike Smith, Gold in Men's Hockey

To honour and celebrate these Kingstonians, the Mayor will be hosting a community celebration – details coming soon. 221 athletes represented Canada winning 10 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze medals in the Sochi Winter Games from February 7-23.
