Mayor Paterson gets to work on youth employment strategy

March 6, 2015 -

Mayor Bryan Paterson, in collaboration with the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, is reaching out to Kingston youth through a series of focus groups to develop a City of Kingston youth employment strategy.

"One of the priorities in my first 100 days was to hear from young people on the barriers to employment in Kingston," said Mayor Paterson. "In 2014 the Ontario unemployment rate for youth 15 to 24 was 15.8 per cent. We have a lot of young people looking for jobs and these meetings are the first step in developing a framework for our youth employment strategy."

The Mayor will conduct two focus groups specifically with youth to get their perspective on barriers to youth employment in Kingston and what the City can do to foster job creation and enhance employment resources.

"Hearing from youth who are directly impacted is an important first step in developing a youth employment strategy," said Bhavana Varma, President and CEO of the United Way. "These young people are thrilled the Mayor is focusing on an issue that is so important to them and that he is taking the time to seek their input."

"I'm excited to be working directly with our city's youth as we develop this strategy," said Paterson. "Our young people are one of our community's greatest assets and together we will establish Kingston as a national leader in facilitating youth employment."
