From July 27 to August 12, 2012 athletes from across Canada competed in the Olympic Games in London, England. Of those athletes five were from Kingston and two made it to the podium, winning silver medals. Kingston's Olympians include:
- Rob Gibson Men's Rowing 8 Silver Medalist

"I am excited to formally recognize our local Olympic heroes for their achievements in sport during the London Games," said Mayor Mark Gerretsen. "We have heard from Kingstonians expressing the importance of recognizing our Olympians, and I am happy to invite residents to this celebration to honour these dedicated athletes and ambassadors for our community."
Mayor Gerretsen invites and encourages all community members to join the celebration of these tremendous athletes. This celebratory event includes a special presentation to the Olympians from the Mayor and an opportunity for Kingstonians to meet and interact with our Olympians, including a free skate at the Market Square rink.
During the London 2012 Olympic Games 277 Canadian athletes competed in 26 sports, and they proudly brought home 18 medals. Kingstonians watched with pride as Kingston's own Simon Whitfield led Canada's Olympic Team as the flag bearer for the opening ceremonies, and as Rob Gibson and Will Crothers, members of the men's eight rowing team, took to the podium to accept silver medals.
