The Men of the Deeps, North America's only coal miners' choir, will make an April 9 stop at the Grand Theatre on its Fiftieth Anniversary Tour. The 28-member choir, under the direction of Stephen Muise, will be presenting its time-honoured program of coal-mining songs from around the world, as well as popular songs from their beloved Cape Breton Island.
Founded in 1966 by Dr. John O'Donnell as a Centennial project, The Men of the Deeps was such a success that the members decided to continue and, 50 years later, a couple of members from the earliest days are still singing.
The choir shot to fame as a guest on the late Cape Breton singer-songwriter Rita MacNeil's television specials. They often toured with MacNeil across Canada. They have also appeared with actress Vanessa Redgrave at a special concert in Kosovo and she has become one of the group's biggest fans.
This is the first of two celebratory tours, the other one will take place in July 2017 as part of Canada's Sesquicentennial celebrations.
