Next Step: Shannon Park & new community centre

January 14, 2014 -

The City is holding an open house to present information and get public input on plans to enhance the recreation facilities in Shannon Park and create a new community centre. The redevelopment of Shannon Park and the construction of the community centre are part of a longer term Regeneration Strategy for the Rideau Heights neighbourhood. Community members are invited to this session to learn more about the broader Regeneration Strategy and provide input.

The Regeneration Strategy, currently in development, represents a partnership between the City of Kingston and the Kingston and Frontenac Housing Corporation and will offer a long-term plan to improve housing, open spaces, and community services in the Rideau Heights neighbourhood.

The open house is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Catholic Elementary School – Bishop Remi-Gaulin, 51 Virginia St.

"We want to meet with people who live in the Rideau Heights neighbourhood to let them know what we are building and get their thoughts on what will work best in Shannon Park. The session on January 28 will build upon previous public consultation work to assist in finalizing the park plans," says Sheldon Laidman, Director of Housing.

In partnership with the Limestone District School Board, the construction of the community centre will provide shared educational, social, and recreational facilities. Other planned park improvements include the construction of an outdoor multi-use sports court, pathways and seating, and improved sports fields. In addition, the City is excited to again be partnering with the local Rideau Heights community organization, which has fundraised a substantial portion of the costs required to construct what will be the largest skateboard park in Kingston.

This open house will provide an opportunity for the community to hear about the planning process and construction schedule and share input on the redevelopment of the park space and community centre.
