Parking fines increase starting on Feb. 1
January 19, 2018 -
As of Feb. 1, fines will increase for two kinds of parking violations for the first time in more than 25 years:
- Failing to display a parking receipt – this fine will be $25 with an early payment option of $20 in 2018. The 2017 fine for this was $15 with a $10 early payment option.
- Parking at an expired meter – this fine will be $20 with an early payment option of $15 in 2018. The 2017 fine was $15 with an early payment of $10.
"As parking rates increase, it is important to also increase penalties for parking violations. Fines should be high enough to discourage people from attempting to avoid paying the parking fee," says Ian Semple, manager, service development.
The move to increase these fines was part of the City's parking fees and fines review that was conducted and approved by city council in 2016.
Tickets for these parking violations are handed out in City-owned lots and in regulated on-street parking areas.
Use Honk App to Help Avoid Parking Fines
Semple encourages all Kingston motorists to download the Honk Mobile app. It allows you to pay for parking in many downtown lots using your smart phone. It sends a reminder when you have 15 minutes left on your parking period so that you can top up your parking and avoid fines.
Download the HonkMobile app at www.honkmobile.com or from the Google Play or iTunes App Store.
