Rideau Heights regeneration plan to be shared at open house
March 21, 2018 -
Come see the next improvements planned to regenerate Rideau Heights at the Phase 2 kick-off open house 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4 at Kingston Community Health Centre, 263 Weller Ave.
"The first phase concentrated on the area around Shannon Park. The second phase of the 20-year plan focuses on the area around Headway Park and includes much-needed mixed-income housing as well as park improvements and a new public street," says Sheldon Laidman, director of housing and social services.
The City has hired a consulting team to develop the plan for the lands bounded by Weller Avenue, Wilson Street and Compton Street in Rideau Heights. It will include:
- Infill housing to complete block patterns and offer more mixed-income housing
- A new public street and private laneways to improve access for waste collection and emergency services
- Improvements to the play area and recreational opportunity in Headway Park
- Reconfigured parking areas close to homes
The Rideau Heights Regeneration Strategy was developed over a two-year period and included extensive community input throughout the process. The neighbourhood improvements will happen over a 20-year period with early work including the construction of the new community centre, library, skate park, and upcoming redevelopment of Shannon Park. The grand opening of the Rideau Heights Community Centre on April 21 will mark the completion of an important community facility which will offer local social and recreational programming for residents of all ages.
