Rock the Square with Arkells and Will Hunter Band on August 1

July 23, 2014 -

Kick off the Civic Holiday weekend with a free performance by Arkells in Springer Market Square on Friday, August 1. Will Hunter Band will open the show at 8 p.m., followed by a set by acclaimed Canadian band Arkells. Presented by the City of Kingston, Rockin the Square is a free show for all ages.

Arkells are a critically acclaimed rock n roll band, known for their classic songwriting, electric live show, and workman like touring ethic. Jackson Square, the band's first full length LP was released in 2008 to critical and commercial acclaim, garnering the Juno Award for New Group Of The Year in 2010. In 2011, they released Michigan Left, a collection of blue-eyed soul, sing-a-long anthems. In 2012 they won the Juno Award For Group Of The Year, and the CBC Music award for Best Live Band.

The new album from Arkells is titled High Noon and was written in Hamilton and produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, The Kooks, M83). This collection of songs are the band's most unabashed effort yet - politically charged, heart on your sleeve lyrics combined with adventurously modern and throwback production stylings. Arkells have toured with acts such as Metric, The Tragically Hip, Tokyo Police Club, Billy Talent, British Sea Power, Anti-Flag and The Black Crowes.

Will Hunter Band is a new indie pop/rock group from Kingston with roots in folk, funk and punk and an emphasis on big hooks. Will started performing in Kingston and Toronto in 2012 as an acoustic solo act, opening for groups from all over such as Sun Wizards, Jane's Party, and Kim Churchill. After playing the southern Ontario circuit for a year, Will took his acoustic performance on the road with the ‘Out East' tour in the summer of 2013, playing small venues from Halifax to Vancouver.

After over a year of playing the acoustic circuit, and one national acoustic tour, other members were added to create the full band. Don ‘Pineapple' on drums, Cam Wyatt on lead guitar and Boris Baker on the bass. Over the past year, WHB have been fortunate enough to perform many Canadian indie groups such as The Balconies, Good for Grapes, Two Hours Traffic, Wildlife and USS. The band has their freshman release scheduled to be out in August 2014.

This Rockin the Square performance with Arkells is sponsored by our media partners, 98.9 The Drive. Rockin the Square is free and will take place rain or shine. Please bring your refillable water bottles as the Utilities Kingston Quench Buggy will be on site to offer fresh, cold water. For more information on Rockin the Square visit www.cityofkingston.ca
