Take the Golden Diverter Challenge and #WasteNotYGK
May 22, 2018 -
The City of Kingston wants to recognize its Golden Diverters and challenge the community to #WasteNotYGK to divert 65 per cent of residential waste from landfill by 2025.
"We've had great success with the Remarkable Recycler challenge in years past so we wanted to kick it up a notch to recognize Golden Diverters who also use their green bins to help reduce waste in landfill," says Heather Roberts, director of solid waste. "These residents achieve the gold standard for waste diversion in our City."
The Golden Diverter Challenge is part of the wider #WasteNotYGK challenge – it challenges all Kingstonians to reduce their waste by: buying less packaging and waste; buying or trading second-hand items; and using their green bins and blue and grey boxes to divert residential waste from landfill.
Take up the challenge!
Know what to do with a plastic shopping bag or a cardboard can with metal ends once you are done with them? Do you correctly use your green bin weekly? YOU may already be Golden Diverter – and can encourage others to join you on Twitter using #WasteNotYGK.
Register to participate at GetInvolved.CityofKingston.ca by June 1 or while spaces are available. You must live in a residential home in Kingston with curbside recycling and garbage pick-up to be eligible.
You will have your collectibles audited for sorting accuracy during the month of June. If your waste is sorted perfectly – meaning that you correctly use your green bin and you've set out one bag of garbage or less – your household will get golden recognition and have your name entered in a random draw for an Apple iPad.
Households with up to three errors will be considered Remarkable Recyclers and will receive special grey and blue boxes.
Don't wait, get practicing! Know what goes where. Help make sure your household waste is collected as expected:
