The Grand Theatre Celebrates its 5th Anniversary Since its Monumental Restoration

May 1, 2013 -

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of its reopening, the City is asking patrons to share their favourite memory of the Grand Theatre at facebook.com/kingstongrandtheatre or twitter.com/Kingston_Grand.

In the past five years the Grand Theatre has sold over 274,000 tickets worth over $8.4 million dollars. Forty-six performances presented for schools have resulted in more than 18,000 students having the pleasure to experience the live performing arts with their friends and teachers in their own community.

On the evening of May 2, 2008 the Grand Theatre welcomed over 700 patrons to the opening night of the Kinsmen Club of Kingston's production of Beauty and The Beast. After being closed for 3 years for an extensive restoration, the Grand Theatre was once again open.

Cultural Director Brian McCurdy had only been in the community a few months, and was delighted with the response from the crowd. "There was such pride in the faces of the business owners, sponsors, volunteers, and local cultural community to see their beloved Grand Theatre open once again. It was the vision of these people, along with the City of Kingston, who have made this theatre the cultural gem in the heart of our historic downtown," says McCurdy.

The Grand Theatre Restoration Foundation, now the Grand Theatre Foundation, has continued its commitment to fostering arts programming in the community and it has raised more than $500,000 in the past five years in individual donations and corporate sponsorship. The Grand Theatre Presents Series and the Education and Community Engagement programming would not exist without this support. As Michael Caldwell of Caldwell Advisory, one of Foundation's supporters states: "The arts can evoke many emotions in people… We hope to sponsor events that help promote a feeling of joy and exuberance. To be a sponsor of Randy Bachman [March 1, 2013] will be a wonderful memory to keep. After all, I grew up with his music. His story-telling provided a lot of insight as to how artists get their inspiration."

Five years later the Grand Theatre Presents series has featured hundreds of productions from dance, Broadway, theatre, music and family programming – all curated by McCurdy. "I wanted to find a balance of artists who had not been to the community before, and those types of shows that Kingstonians already love but would like to see in our theatre," says McCurdy. "Along with our Artistic Administrator, Jayson Duggan, we work to find a balance of country artists, family shows, Broadway musicals, contemporary dance companies and up and coming vocalists to complement the great work that our resident companies produce including Theatre Kingston, Blue Canoe Productions, Kingston Symphony and the Kinsmen Club of Kingston."

The Grand Theatre wishes to thank the Kingston community for its support and encouragement and will be announcing the 2013-2014 Grand Theatre Presents season on May 30, 2013.
