null Utilities Kingston Seeks Volunteers For Lead Testing

January 21, 2013 -

On Behalf of Utilities Kingston

Utilities Kingston is seeking 25 qualified property owners interested in participating in the regular, voluntary Community Lead Testing Program.

Kingston's drinking water is regularly tested according to Ministry of the Environment standards. It exceeds strict water quality standards and is completely lead free. However, lead can enter the water supply from old lead service lines (pipes) or lead solder in the plumbing that services privately-owned property. Utilities Kingston tests the water in the homes and businesses of community volunteers for lead every six months.

"While the City owns the water treatment infrastructure and Utilities Kingston proudly operates it to a high level of standard, everyone has a role in protecting our drinking water," says Jim Keech, President and C.E.O. of Utilities Kingston. "Volunteering in the provincially-regulated Community Lead Testing Program can help customers learn whether the properties they own are serviced by plumbing that contains lead so they can ensure their water is safe and clean."

Consider becoming a community lead testing volunteer, if:

  • you own a building constructed before 1950, or
  • you live in a home built prior to 1990 that has plumbing suspected to have lead solder.

If interested, please contact customer service at 613-546-0000.

To complete the test, a Certified Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator with Utilities Kingston will visit your property to take water samples. If you volunteered in the past, you may also be contacted for follow-up testing.
