Want to build a secondary suite? The City now offers funding support
June 16, 2014 -
The City is now offering the Secondary Suite Affordable Housing grant program: two new funding streams to encourage qualified homeowners to build secondary suites to contribute to the stock of affordable housing in Kingston.
"Affordable housing is a top priority for the City. This program offers financial support to homeowners so that they can create affordable rental units and enjoy the benefits of rental income. Secondary suites are a win for tenants and homeowners alike," says Lee Campbell, Acting Director, Housing. Secondary suites are separate modestly-sized living quarters that provide alternative housing options for smaller households, seniors, live-in caregivers, and other households requiring alternative affordable living arrangements.
Eligible homeowners can benefit from two new funding supports:
- The Secondary Suites Municipal Fee Rebate: provides a forgivable loan of up to $7,000 to cover costs associated with any required planning approvals, such as the application fee for a Zoning By-Law Amendment.
- The Secondary Suites Affordable Housing Grant: provides a forgivable loan of up to $15,000 or 75% (whichever is less) for costs associated with developing a secondary suite in an owner-occupied home.
Each funding stream has its own conditions and requirements for project eligibility and is conditional on the finished rental unit being offered at an affordable rental price for a specific period of time. Full details and applications are available at www.CityofKingston.ca/secondarysuites
