West End Asked To Lower Water Use For 2 To 4 Days

Utilities Kingston is asking residents in the west end of the city to reduce water use over the next two to four days.

The Point Pleasant Water Treatment Plant, which serves 15,000 customers west of Little Cataraqui River, Armstrong Road and Sydenham Road, is currently operating at 75 per cent of its normal capacity due to a failed valve.

Utilities Kingston assures residents that water quality has not been affected. While there is enough potable water to meet demand, residents are urged to conserve water to help ensure adequate supply for fire protection.

The failed valve at Point Pleasant Water Treatment Plant has reduced the capacity to draw water from Lake Ontario. Utilities Kingston's Certified Water and Wastewater Treatment Operators are working as quickly as possible to implement the best solution and expect it will take two to four days to return to normal operating capacity.

Here are some tips for conserving water use and to help ensure adequate supply for fire protection:

  • Favour short showers over baths
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and avoid running the tap longer than needed
  • Don't flush every time you use the toilet
  • Hold off on doing laundry to after 9 p.m.
  • If your dishwasher is more than 10 years-old, wash dishes by hand and use a separate container for rinsing
  • On newer, Energy Star dishwashers, set the timer to wash after 9 p.m.
  • Shift your water use to off-peak times (overnight, or after 9 p.m.)
