Work to expand Kingston Airport begins
April 12, 2018 -
The City of Kingston is beginning construction to expand Kingston ‘Norman Rogers' Airport terminal. Work to extend its runway will start later this spring. The airport will remain open for business throughout the $16.1 million upgrade work, which is anticipated to be complete late 2018.
"I'm so pleased that work is underway on Kingston's airport expansion," says Mayor Bryan Paterson. "Part of being a smart and livable 21st century city is making it as easy as possible to travel to and from Kingston. This expansion will benefit both residents and visitors to Kingston and will provide an important boost for our local economy!"
The terminal will be expanded and reconfigured to accommodate up to 103 passengers versus the 30-40 it can serve today. Passengers can look forward to:
- Check-in, baggage processing and delivery systems that can comfortably handle peak demand.
- Enhanced accessibility features.
- Improved energy efficiency.
Construction will start with foundation and utility upgrades. Fencing will be placed around the site.
Renderings of the new terminal building are available at www.CityofKingston.ca/Airport.
The runway is being extended from 5,000 to 6,000 feet. Three hundred feet will be added at its south end and 700 feet on its north end.
Upgrades will also be made to the runway lighting: a new approach lighting system is being installed and a portion of it will be embedded in the runway.
New LED airfield guidance signs are being installed and the existing runway- edge lights will also be upgraded to LED bulbs to conserve energy.
"This expansion will help us realize the economic advantages associated with a larger airport and enhanced passenger air services. The expanded terminal more than doubles our passenger capacity and the extended runway makes us more capable and flexible. We plan to keep our passengers comfortable during construction and well into the future," says Rick Reed, manager, Kingston Airport.
New regulations introduced by Transport Canada in 2017 allowed for an added Aerodrome Work Consultation on the runway extension, which was held late last summer. The results of the consultation were sent to Transport Canada and are available for review at www.CityofKingston.ca/Airport.
Undertaking the expansion of Kingston's Norman Rogers Airport is a priority set by council in the City's 2015-18 Strategic Plan. The need to expand the airport was first identified in the 2007 Airport Master Plan and the need for a longer runway was affirmed by the 2012 Kingston Airport Business Case for Expansion.
