Thank you for getting involved in Density by Design!

No doubt about it: the Kingston community is deeply engaged in discussions about where and how mid-rise and tall buildings should grow here. The depth of interest in this community conversation – witnessed both in our Density by Design engagements and in community discussions beyond it – shows participants’ great love for our city.

While opinions obviously vary about how best to intensify Kingston, we are all agreed that we want to achieve ‘good’ density by way of strategically located well-designed buildings. To have an informed discussion on how we achieve that city-wide goal means investing in a good understanding of the issues and options that exist and engaging the whole community in this conversation.

We have been very encouraged by the turnout at our events and the extent of the input we have received.

  • 108 residents participated in three open houses in January and February.
  • 1,630 pins were placed on our Get Involved Kingston map by 157 participants to indicate where they thought mid-rise and taller buildings could go.
  • Phone calls and emails to Planning Services staff to offer input on the Density by Design Issues & Options Report.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to let us know your thoughts!  Staff will continue to collect comments on the Issues and Options Report through this process, but to ensure that your feedback is reflected in the draft policies, please ensure that they are submitted as soon as possible. If you have further input, please feel free to contact Andrea Gummo, Acting Manager, Policy Planning by email or phone (613-546-4291 ext. 3256).

Next steps

The conversation will continue. We are in the midst of preparing three reports to further inform the development of the Mid-Rise and Tall Building Policies.  They include:

  • A land economics report.
  • An overview of approaches used by other municipalities.
  • A feedback report on what we have heard so far during our Density by Design engagements.

Thanks, again, for helping us shape these policies so that we can grow the city in a livable, strategic and sustainable way that is right for Kingston.
