null Jingle Bell Walk To Light Memorial Tree This Friday

December 11, 2012

Jingle all the way from Springer Market Square to light up the Memorial Tree in City Park at the Jingle Bell Walk on Friday, Dec. 14. This popular community event starts with a free skate (weather-permitting) accompanied by tunes from She Sings at 6 p.m. at Springer Market Square.

"The Jingle Bell Walk is a wonderful Kingston tradition. How better to celebrate the spirit of the season than with song, active community fun, lights and giving?" says Sue Hitchcock, Community Events Co-ordinator.

Hot chocolate will be served in exchange for a donation to the City's P.R.O. Kids charity - Positive Recreational Opportunities for Kids - which helps make recreation programs affordable for Kingston's kids and youth. Bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation for the Partners in Mission Food Bank and get a free Jingle Bell necklace for a jingly walk to City Park.

The 10-minute walk itself starts at 6:45 p.m. when you and your loved ones can follow Santa on his sleigh to City Park to turn on the LED lights on the Memorial Tree. Santa Claus and the winner of the Ride with Santa contest, 7 year-old Jack Cusson, will preside over the ceremonial flicking of the switch.

Enjoy Kelli Trottier And Mushy Peas Back At The Square

Return to the Square to skate to an unforgettable performance by Kelli Trottier, world-renowned fiddler, dancer and entertainer, Kelli Trottier with the Mushy Peas will be performing in Springer Market Square from 7 to 8 p.m. You'll be tapping your toes to tunes enjoyed by our early pioneers.

Great Skate Donate

Bring your gently-used skates to the Square for the Great Skate Donate. Boys and adult sizes are especially needed this year. Leave your skates with us and we will ensure they are paired with those in our community who need them. Anyone donating skates can enter a draw to win a Doug Gilmore-autographed jersey.

Be A Non-Smoker By 2013

This year, the tobacco-free walk is again being sponsored in part by Play, Live, Be Tobacco-free (www.playlivebetobaccofree.ca). Plan to quit smoking by the New Year: KFL&A Public Health will have a booth available in the Square offering information to anyone who wishes to plan a smoke-free future.

The monies received through the sponsorships for the lighting of the Memorial Tree in City Park go to offset the costs of this initiative with any remaining funds being donated to the Partners in Mission Food Bank and the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign.
