null Kitchen safety is focus of Fire Prevention Week

September 30, 2013 -

This year's theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 6 to 12, is "Prevent Kitchen Fires" and Kingston Fire & Rescue's events will focus on safe cooking, the importance of smoke alarms and home fire escape planning.

"The leading cause of residential fires in Ontario is unattended cooking. People must stay in the kitchen while they cook," says Fire Inspector Tracey LeBlanc.

Learn more at three Kingston Fire & Rescue open houses on Sunday, Oct. 6 featuring fire station and fire truck tours, and fire safety and prevention displays:

  • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Station #3, 211 Gore Rd. – free pancake breakfast!
  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Station #7, 905 Woodbine Rd.  – Junior Firefighter Challenge
  • 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Station #8 at 1485 Unity Rd. – Coffee and donuts

"Although we are focusing on safe cooking, the importance of smoke alarms and home fire escape planning, the underlying message is to take responsibility for fire safety in your home," says LeBlanc. House fires are growing bigger and moving faster because of the amount of man-made products in homes, including furniture, carpeting, plastic and toys.

It's the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries when you change your clocks.  Inspector LeBlanc stresses that only working smoke alarms will alert the occupants to the early stages of fire and allow for safe evacuation of the building. Families are urged to practice their home fire escape plan during Fire Prevention Week.
