null Mayor Encourages All Parties to Work Together to Include Heads and Beds in 2013 Ontario Budget
May 15, 2013 -
Mayor Mark Gerretsen is reaching out to the opposition parties and the government to encourage them to include an adjustment to the payments in lieu of property taxes (heads and beds) in the 2013 Ontario Budget.
"I understand the Premier and the Leader of the NDP are meeting today to discuss support for the 2013 Ontario Budget," said Mayor Mark Gerretsen. "Our hope is that this policy is given consideration in those conversations."
In the letter sent to all three party leaders, the Mayor encourages them to consider adjusting the heads and beds levy municipalities receive in lieu of property taxes for provincial facilities, like hospitals, colleges and universities. The current rate of $75 has not changed since 1987.
"Since 2007 we have been actively advocating for this important change with all parties and we feel this budget is the time," said Gerretsen. "Municipalities are facing competing priorities and budget constraints similar to the other levels of government and this policy change can go a long way in helping not only Kingston but other municipalities across the province."
