- Calvin Park Branch Kingston Frontenac Public Library 88 Wright Cres.
Pick up your yarn and needles and head down to the library. The Kingston Frontenac Public Library is launching a new series of ‘maker’ programming, beginning this month with a focus on knitting.
Beginners are invited to four Open Making: Knitting programs at the Calvin Park and Isabel Turner Branches. Expert knitters from the community will be on hand as mentors to guide you as you learn the basics at the learning station, and can also help intermediate knitters trouble-shoot their latest project. Sessions will be held January 7 and 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Calvin Park Branch, Saturday January 12 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Isabel Turner Branch, and Saturday January 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Calvin Park Branch.
Knitters of all levels of experience will enjoy the Social Knitting Group that meets every Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Isabel Turner Branch. Bring your own project, or participate in a knit-along.
Share your skills in our Community Scarf Knitting project. Drop into the Isabel Turner, Calvin Park, Pittsburgh, Rideau Heights or Sydenham Branches during regular open hours, and staff will direct you to the communal knitting station. Pick up the scarf that is in progress, add as many rows as you would like, then set it aside for the next visiting knitter. Completed scarves will be donated to the Kingston Street Mission in the city, and to the food bank at Southern Frontenac Community Services in Sydenham.
A community survey in the fall revealed strong interest in crafting artisan demonstrations, small repairs, photography, 3D design, food and gardens, and general help with technology. New programs are being developed through 2019, with a focus on photography coming in February.
