Implementing the child care wage enhancements in 2018

In 2018, the provincial wage enhancement investment will continue to support a wage increase of up to $2 per hour plus 17.5 percent benefits for eligible centre based staff.  The Home Child Care Enhancement Grant (HCCEG) will support an increase of up to $20 per day in 2018 for home child care providers.

What's being offered

The intent of the wage enhancement is to close the wage gap between RECEs working in publicly funded schools and RECEs working in licensed child care settings and to support access to high quality child care programs. The ministry has established an hourly maximum wage rate of $27.07 per hour (up from 26.68 in 2017) for wage enhancement and $270.70 per day (up from $266.80 in 2017) for full HCCEG ($162.42 for partial HCCEG (up from $160.08 in 2017)).

In addition, the Ministry of Education will continue to provide a supplemental grant of $150 for each eligible centre-based full-time employee (FTE) or home visitor FTE and $50 for each eligible home child care provider in 2017.

Beginning in 2018, licensed centres or agencies created in 2018 are eligible to apply for wage enhancement or HCCEG in the year the program begins operations.

Administrative support

Once again, Housing and Social Services, will offer funding for administration support.

Within the application itself, providers will automatically apply to receive $30 for each eligible centre-based FTE or home visitor FTE, and $30 for each eligible home child care provider.

Administrative funding will be provided as a total per agency up to a maximum of $1,020 (with a minimum of $120).
