City of Kingston Public Works declares Significant Weather Event and urges residents to use caution when travelling
The City monitors weather events in relation to all municipal services. At this time, Public Works is in the process of declaring a Significant Weather Event under Ontario’s Minimum Maintenance Standards.
This declaration is triggered when Environment Canada issues an alert through its Public Weather Alerting Program for an approaching or occurring weather hazard that may pose a significant danger to sidewalk, bicycle lane, and roadway users.
The forecast shows multiple significant weather events occurring in succession: freezing rain transitioning to heavy rainfall followed by temperatures dropping below zero that, when accompanied by high winds, could create flash freeze conditions. The combination of these events has the potential to create multiple hazards simultaneously on roadways, sidewalks and outdoor public spaces, such as parks and trails.
We urge residents to please use extreme caution or avoid travel during this time.
Transit Snow Routes
Kingston Transit will operate on snow plan routing for morning service on Monday, Dec. 29 2025, using primary road corridors to ensure safety and reliability.
Should travel be essential, check your snow plan route before you go at KingstonTransit.ca/Schedules-and-Maps (click your route and navigate to the “Snow Route” tab), use the Transit app for real-time information and plan extra time for your trip.
Waste Collection
For residents preparing for waste collection, we recommend that garbage bins are not put out overnight. Automated waste containers and green bins cannot be collected if covered in ice.
If waste and organic bins are stored outdoors, please ensure they are out of the elements or covered to prevent ice build up.
Impact to Municipal Services
The City continues to track the weather forecast and at this time, only the above services are impacted by the Significant Weather Event declaration.
