City of Kingston Seeks Public Input Ahead of Relaunch of Better Homes Kingston Program
Calling all homeowners interested in making their homes more energy-efficient and climate-friendly! The City of Kingston is seeking input to inform the relaunch of the Better Homes Kingston program.
About Better Homes Kingston
Launched in 2022, the Better Homes Kingston program is a local improvement charge (LIC) financing program that supports energy retrofits for residential dwellings. With support from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund, the pilot program offered up to $40,000 in loans and incentives to help homeowners reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) through upgrades like air-source heat pumps, solar panels and improved insulation.
368 completed projects achieved an average GHG reduction of 66% per project, making it one of the most successful energy retrofit programs in Canada. The Better Homes Kingston program is expected to relaunch in 2026.
“We’re incredibly proud of what the community achieved through the pilot program,” says Soren Christianson, Project Manager of the Climate Leadership Division at the City. “Now, we’re looking ahead to 2026 and want to hear from residents and contractors to ensure the next phase is even more accessible, impactful and aligned with local needs.”
