Kingston Fire & Rescue – Structure Fire Update
Kingston Fire & Rescue (KFR) responded to a structure fire at 11:47 a.m. on December 21, 2025, at 354–358 King Street East. Fire suppression operations continued for several hours, and the fire was fully extinguished at approximately 12:00 p.m. on December 22, 2025.
The buildings most significantly impacted were the heritage properties located at 354, 356, and 358 King Street East. The fire originated at 354 King Street East, The Shuroop, a two-storey commercial restaurant with a basement. The fire spread through the building’s framing into the attic space, affecting both the commercial occupancies below and five residential units located on the second and third floors above A-One Clothing.
There were no civilian injuries or fatalities, and no firefighter injuries reported. All residents present at the time of the fire were safely evacuated.
Several nearby businesses experienced water damage because of fire suppression and overhaul operations. Utilities Kingston was on scene to assist in maintaining or shutting off utilities as required to minimize further impact to surrounding properties. Some neighbouring businesses may also be affected by smoke accumulation, as the fire burned for approximately 10 hours.
10 KFR apparatus responded to the incident, with roughly 40 firefighters battling the blaze throughout the morning. Damage assessments indicate approximately 75% roof collapse at 354 King Street East, with significant basement flooding, and heavy fire damage to the kitchen area on the north side of the first floor.
Kingston Fire Prevention Division investigators were on scene for approximately five hours, with the Ontario Fire Marshal being notified as well, but did not attend.
Currently, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. The fire originated within the food preparation/dishwashing area of the restaurant kitchen. The scene was released back to business owners and landlords at approximately 5:00 p.m. on December 22, 2025. All major intersections in the area have since reopened.
Preliminary damage estimates are approximately $1 million.
