10 years forward: Reflecting on the progress made since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report
A closer look at Canada’s reconciliation efforts will be the focus of conversation at an event later this week at City Hall. The City of Kingston and Friends of The Spire invite the community to attend 10 Years Forward: Reflections on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report on Sunday, Feb. 22. Kingston is honoured to welcome Marie Wilson, Canadian journalist and Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) commissioner, and Stephen Kakfwi, Dene leader and former Northwest Territories premier as the keynote speakers.
Just over ten years ago, the TRC published a report including 94 Calls to Action to move reconciliation forward in Canada. Marie and Stephen will discuss the progress that’s been made since the release of the report in 2015 and explore the opportunities and challenges ahead. The two authors will also share reflections from their respective 2025 publications: North of Nowhere and Stoneface: A Defiant Dene.
“Marie and Stephen both have such profound personal and professional experiences, and there’s so much we can learn from them. This is such a beautiful opportunity for learning, but also for dialogue for the entire community. I’m grateful we could make this one-of-a-kind event happen in Kingston,” says Amber Bryant-Peller, Manager of Indigenous Initiatives at the City of Kingston.
This event is made possible thanks to a partnership with Friends of The Spire, the Joint Truth and Reconciliation Action Group, Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest and the Kingston Institute for Multi-Racial Inclusion.
Register for the event
Those interested in attending are encouraged to register in advance through Eventbrite. Registration is free, with a pay-what-you-can option available at the door to help cover event costs. The authors’ books will also be available for purchase.
Downtown parking is available on many streets and in nearby municipal lots and garages. An accessible entrance to City Hall can be accessed from Market Street.
