A day in charge: Step into the Mayor’s shoes for the third annual Mayor for a Day program
What’s it like to step into the mayor’s shoes for a day? Grade 5 students in Kingston are encouraged to apply for the City’s Mayor for a Day program, back again this spring to inspire the next generation of community leaders.
Mayor for a Day is a unique opportunity for local youth to explore municipal government and civic life. One Grade 5 student will be selected to spend a day with Mayor Bryan Paterson, gaining behind-the-scenes insight into how the City operates. The selected student will tour City Hall, attend a meeting and community event, sit in the mayor’s chair in Council Chambers, and share lunch with Mayor Paterson. The day’s schedule will be tailored to reflect the student’s interests in local government and Kingston.
“Each year, I’m inspired by the creativity and insight young people bring to this program,” says Mayor Bryan Paterson. “Mayor for a Day is a chance for students to get involved, share their ideas, and see firsthand how local decisions are made. It’s a meaningful way to help them feel connected to their city and confident in their ability to make a difference.”
