Ailey II returns to Kingston Grand Theatre after more than a decade
Ailey II will bring its signature blend of power, grace, and soul-stirring artistry to Kingston Grand Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 21. This marks a rare and thrilling opportunity for Kingston to experience one of the most celebrated modern dance ensembles in the world, as part of the City of Kingston’s Grand OnStage presenting series.
Founded in 1974 by the legendary Alvin Ailey, Ailey II merges the spirit and energy of the next generation of dance talent with the creative vision and legacy of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Under the artistic direction of Francesca Harper, the company has earned a global reputation for dynamic performances that connect deeply with audiences through movement, emotion, and storytelling.
“Having Ailey II return to Kingston after more than a decade is a truly special occasion,” says Jayson Duggan, Performing Arts Manager, City of Kingston. “The company’s performances are an electrifying blend of athleticism and artistry and is sure to be a season highlight for our dance audience.”
A dazzling repertoire of contemporary works
The evening’s program features three captivating works that showcase the company’s extraordinary range and vitality:
Streams – A classic Alvin Ailey masterwork that explores the flow and rhythm of life through pure movement and spiritual depth.
Down the Rabbit Hole – An imaginative and visually striking piece that takes audiences on a surreal journey through layered realities and dreamlike transformations.
Luminous – A stunning new creation that celebrates light, resilience, and the brilliance of human connection through luminous choreography and radiant energy.
Each work embodies the essence of Ailey II — technically superb, emotionally resonant, and deeply human.
Educational opportunities for Kingston dancers
Dancers from the Kingston community will have an opportunity to learn from these brilliant artists as part of a workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 21. This modern dance workshop will focus on sharing the strength, beauty, and essence of Alvin Ailey’s vision of bringing dance back to the people. Using the foundations of the Lester Horton technique and including contemporary methodologies, the class will begin with a warm-up, followed by center sequences, and culminating in a combination featuring the company’s current repertory. Participants will learn to utilize their strengths, explore their personal style, and discover unfamiliar ways of moving. The workshop is full.
An experience not to be missed
Ailey II’s return represents a milestone in Kingston’s performing arts calendar, bringing an international company of extraordinary young dancers whose performances have inspired audiences from New York to Europe to Asia. The company’s visit offers local audiences the chance to experience the future of modern dance — here at home on the Kingston Grand stage.
Discounted tickets are available for arts workers, CF1 card holders, Kingston Transit Pass holders, and those under the age of 30. Find more information about Grand OnStage discount tickets.
