City of Kingston provides traffic and transit mitigation measures ahead of 2026 LaSalle Causeway lift operations
The City of Kingston is sharing the traffic and transit mitigation measures that will be in place during the 2026 marine navigation season and planned LaSalle Causeway lift operations.
The federally owned and operated LaSalle Causeway will complete the first lift of the 2026 season on Sunday, April 19, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. During this time, the LaSalle Causeway will not be available to motorists, pedestrians or cyclists.
The 2026 lift operation schedule was developed by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) and is approved by Transport Canada. The schedule is based on 2025 traffic data and feedback from stakeholders.

Traffic and transit strategies during scheduled closures
On the day of each channel opening, PSPC traffic control signs around Kingston may indicate as early as 5 a.m. that the LaSalle Causeway is closed. However, the causeway can be accessed and used up until 6 a.m., at which time Highway 2 eastbound will be closed at The Tragically Hip Way and Place D’Armes, and Highway 2 westbound will be closed at Navy Way/Fort Henry Drive. PSPC will start to remove the modular bridge after 6 a.m., with the main marine navigation channel expected to open by 9 a.m.
To address potential traffic congestion and provide alternate travel options, the City is implementing several mitigation strategies:
- Monitoring and adjusting traffic light timing along affected routes, including Montreal Street at John Counter Boulevard, and along Highway 15.
- Sharing information about trip planning tools, such as Google Maps and Waze, for motorists and providing a live web cam of the Waaban Crossing.
- Establishing flexible transit routing during lift operations to minimize impacts to riders.
- Updating real-time transit information via the Transit app, or your preferred map and travel app.
During causeway closures, Route 60 will replace Route 601/602 on Sundays. Route 60 operates between CFB Kingston/RMC and King's Crossing (Division/401) via Highway 15, Gore, John Counter, and Division. Find the Route 60 schedule and how to plan your trip on Kingston Transit’s website.
