Utilities Kingston launching AMI 2.0 meter upgrade program
Utilities Kingston will begin a multi-year program this summer to upgrade electric, water, and gas meters across the community.
The upgrades support ongoing efforts to modernize metering systems, maintain safe and reliable service, and prepare for future energy needs.
The program introduces Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) 2.0, next-generation metering technology being adopted across the utility sector. This technology improves the measurement and management of energy and water usage, while enabling enhanced safety features and more accurate data.
“Upgrading our metering systems is an important step in maintaining reliable service for our customers and preparing for the future,” said Ben Solc, Manager of Meter Services.
“These upgrades will help improve safety, efficiency, and the way we deliver utility services in our community.”
What customers can expect
Work will be scheduled by neighbourhood, and customers will receive notice before crews begin work in their area so they can prepare for the visit.
During a scheduled visit:
- Most meter installations take up to 30 minutes per service.
- A brief service interruption may occur.
- Customers will need to be home to provide access.
- Crews will carry identification and arrive in marked vehicles.
Where possible, electric, water, and gas meters will be replaced during the same visit to minimize disruption.
Safety and service improvements
The upgraded meters will support enhanced safety features and system performance, including:
- Early detection of electrical issues, arc flash, and remote shutoff
- Automatic gas shutoff in unsafe conditions, such as high temperatures and high flows, which could indicate a fire or a leak
- Early water leak detection
The new system will also improve reliability, increase data accuracy, and better support future advancements in energy and utility services.
Customer responsibilities
There are no fees for standard meter replacements. However, if deficiencies are identified with customer-owned equipment, such as a damaged electric meter base or unsafe conditions, repairs may be required before a new meter can be installed. Any repairs to customer-owned equipment are the customer’s responsibility. If work is required, our team will explain the next steps on-site and provide follow-up details by email.
