Utilities Kingston wins Gold for contractor safety management

The following news release is being shared on behalf of Utilities Kingston:

Utilities Kingston has been awarded Gold in the Contractor Safety Management category from OHS Canada, recognizing the organization's work to build strong safety partnerships with the contractors who work in the community.

"Winning Gold in the Contractor Safety Management category is an incredible honour for Utilities Kingston and for everyone who has contributed to our contractor safety program over the years," says Scott Robinson, CRSP, supervisor of health and safety at Utilities Kingston. "What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that contractor safety is truly a team effort. It involves our contractors, supervisors, project managers, operations groups, and the health and safety team working together towards the same goal."

Utilities Kingston's contractor safety program has evolved over more than a decade, moving from a compliance and documentation exercise to a partnership built on trust, communication, and shared accountability. Each year, the annual Contractor Safety Days bring contractors and staff together before construction season to talk openly about risk, leadership, and lessons learned.

The results speak for themselves. Utilities Kingston has gone more than 13 years without a critical injury or fatality organization-wide, and more than 10 years without a high-energy, high-consequence incident.

"We never take those results for granted," says Robinson. "Because behind every safety statistic is a person with family, friends, and people who care about them, and that's who we're ultimately trying to protect."

This Gold Award builds on Utilities Kingston's record of safety recognition, including being named one of Canada's Best Safety Cultures in the Workplace in 2025, receiving the Public Safety Excellence Award, sponsored by the Electrical Safety Authority, earlier this year, and earning a Silver Award from OHS Canada for contractor safety management.

"Most importantly, this award reinforces something we believe strongly at Utilities Kingston - that every worker deserves to go home safe at the end of the day," says Robinson.
