Weather-based winter parking restrictions go into effect on Dec. 1

Kingston’s weather-based on-street overnight winter parking restrictions go into effect on Monday, Dec. 1.

Starting Dec. 1:

  • During December and March, overnight on-street parking will be banned only if the weather and conditions require it.
  • During January and February, overnight on-street parking is not permitted no matter the weather conditions.

When a ban is in place, parking on City streets is prohibited from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. On the streets surrounding Kingston General Hospital, the ban runs from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m. Vehicles left on the street during bans are subject to ticketing and towing.

These parking rules were in effect during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 winter seasons as a pilot project. Kingston City Council adopted the weather-based approach permanently at its Oct. 1, 2024, meeting.

“To respond effectively to winter weather, crews need clear streets – and keeping vehicles off them is key. While December and March often bring stretches with lower maintenance needs, a weather-based parking system lets us maintain high standards while permitting parking when conditions are safe,” says Karen Santucci, Director of Public Works and Solid Waste.

Bans will be announced in the afternoon before the night when they are to take effect through news releases, the City’s winter parking webpage, and on social media. Subscribe to our newsletter to receive parking ban notifications in your inbox.
