Fire doesn't wait for finals: Kingston Fire & Rescue shares back-to-school fire and life safety basics

Kingston Fire & Rescue (KFR) wants all students to ace their fire safety exams early to help keep safe, protected and focused on their studies this semester! Fire prevention is critical and knowing a these fire safety tips can help protect you and everyone living around you.

Keep your eyes on your meals – Never leave stoves, hot plates, grills or barbecues, or toaster ovens unattended. Cooking is still one of the leading causes of structure fires in Ontario. Only cook when sober -- if you feel sleepy, drowsy or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, avoid cooking and get takeout delivered from the hundreds of local restaurants instead.

Do a quick tech check – Lithium-ion battery fires or electrical fires are becoming a leading fire cause across Ontario rapidly. With the alarming number of electrical-related calls, we want to remind students to assess their tech! Use only Canadian-certified products, keep batteries away from excessive heat, and check that chargers and cables are in good condition. Always use chargers and devices as directed by the manufacturer.

Never silence a life saver – Every home where you sleep must have smoke alarms on every floor. A carbon monoxide alarm may also be required if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage. Having working alarms is proven to save lives! Never remove or tamper with the alarms in your home and test them monthly. Alarms over 10 years old likely need replacing.

Plan your escape – Did you know you may have less than three minutes to escape a home fire? Fires can spread quickly, especially when furniture, building materials and other household items contain lower-quality or synthetic materials. Make a fire escape plan with your roommates before an emergency happens. Know two ways out, the location of the nearest fire alarm pull station, and the exit doors on your floor. When a fire alarm sounds, leave immediately and stay outside.

We want to wish all incoming students, returning students and families a safe back-to-school season this year. Throughout the year, fire safety campaigns and events across the city will help students prepare for emergencies and learn how to stay safe.
