Update on the City of Kingston's agreements to purchase two surplus school properties
At the Nov. 3 City Council meeting, Council directed City Staff to provide Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) with mutual releases for its agreements to purchase two surplus school properties. Review the meeting details on our Events page.
The City entered into conditional Agreements of Purchase and Sale for the two properties in July 2026, with the intent for the properties to remain in institutional use. Read further in our July news release.
St. Peter Catholic School, 48 Seventh Ave.
The agreement for the purchase of St. Peter Catholic School included a condition that City staff complete due diligence on the property before providing a recommendation to Council. After completing the required due diligence and providing Council with the results of this process, staff were directed by Council to provide the ALCDSB with a mutual release for this agreement, ending the City’s interest in this property. Given this outcome, the City will not be initiating an Expression of Interest (EOI) process to seek institutional users interested in a lease or lease-to-own arrangement for this property.
St. Patrick Catholic School, 158 Patrick St.
The agreement for the purchase of St. Patrick Catholic School was conditional on the City's ability to find a suitable institutional user to buy the property from the City at Fair Market Value (FMV) and keep it in community use. City staff released an EOI on July 9 and closed on September 4 resulting in two submissions, neither of which met the financial conditions of the agreement. Given this outcome, Council have directed staff to provide the school board with a mutual release for this agreement, ending the City’s interest in the property.
