City Hall Tour Guide

City Hall Tour Guides welcome visitors from near and far and help bring Kingston City Hall to life through engaging, educational, and memorable tours. In this public-facing role, during your shifts you’ll lead 30–45 minute guided tours, share stories about Kingston’s history and civic life, and help create a warm, positive visitor experience in one of the city’s most iconic buildings.
This volunteer position plays an important role in how people experience Kingston and connect with the stories that shaped our community.
This role is most active during the tour season (May to October), with occasional opportunities outside this period upon request.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Welcome visitors and provide a friendly, professional first impression of City Hall
  • Deliver guided tours (approximately 30 to 45 minutes) 
  • Share stories about Kingston’s history, architecture, and civic heritage in a clear and accessible way
  • Respond to visitor questions and help manage group flow through the building
  • Provide excellent customer service and assist visitors with general information and directions
  • Track basic visitor statistics when requested
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Comfortable and confident with public speaking and able to present tours to groups of varied sizes
  • Ability to deliver tours in an approachable, engaging way for a variety of audiences
  • A customer-service mindset and an enjoyment of working with the public
  • Interest in Kingston’s history, culture, and stories, with the ability to learn tour content and share it confidently with visitors
  • Previous experience giving guided tours is an asset
  • French or other language skills are an asset

Other requirements and details

  • We provide training, which includes a tour script and a Frequently Asked Questions document
  • Availability: Able to do 2-3 shifts per week is ideal. With a minimum of 1 per week. Shifts are 3-4 hours
  • Physical demands: ability to lead 30–45 minute indoor tours, including multiple flights of stairs and smaller spaces; ability to move A-frame sidewalk signs (approximately 15lbs) 
  • Shifts are primarily seasonal (May to October), with occasional shifts outside the season upon request
