Plateholder Taxi Plate and Vehicle Registration

Review the information below for details on existing taxicab plateholders renewing their taxi plate(s) or registering a vehicle to an existing taxi plate.

To maintain a taxicab plate, the plateholder must obtain and maintain a valid City of Kingston taxicab driver’s licence. 

Fees and requirements

The annual taxi plate renewal fee is $130. There are vehicle registration requirements and applicable fees for each vehicle registered to a taxi plate.

Plateholder taxi plate registration requirements

Access the members portal to renew a taxi plate. All applications must include the following:

• Completed plateholder licence application 
• Proof of valid City of Kingston taxicab driver licence
• Proof of age of majority in the form of valid Government-issued photo id
• Proof that you can legally work in Canada in the form of one of the following: 
  
  • Canadian citizenship
  • Permanent resident status
  • Valid work permit issued by the Government of Canada
• If you are a corporation/partnership:
  • Business Name Registration (formerly Master Business License) or Articles of Incorporation (if applicable)
  • List of directors and/or officers (including addresses)
  • The address of the premises at which the corporation carries on activities 
• Unrestricted Ontario class ‘G’ driver’s licence
• Level 3 Criminal Record Check that includes Judicial Matters and Vulnerable Sector (dated within 90 days of the application)
• 3-year statement of driving record (Driver’s Abstract) issued by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (dated within 30 days of the application)
• Proof of at least 3 years of driving history (if your driver's licence and driver's abstract do not demonstrate this already)

Vehicle registration requirements

To register for a plate, you need to submit the following for each vehicle:  

• Completed application  
• Name of affiliated brokerage  
• Vehicle information: 
  • Year 
  • Make 
  • Model 
  • Colour 
  • Body type (ex: 4 door)  
  • Vehicle VIN Number  
  • Odometer (kilometres)  
• Ontario licence plate number  
• Valid Motor Vehicle permit issued pursuant to the Highway Traffic Act 
• Valid and current vehicle safety standards certificate  
• Proof of commercial liability insurance:
  • With third party liability limit of no less than $2,000,000 inclusive per occurrence for bodily injury, death and damage to property 
  • Includes an endorsement for permission to carry paying passengers or equivalent 
  • Issued by an insurer licensed in Ontario
