Election Jobs

Each election, we hire people to work at voting places. For 2026, voting place workers are required on the following days:

  • Advance voting days: Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Voting day: Monday, Oct. 26, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Voting place workers must attend a mandatory, in-person training session at City Hall, 216 Ontario St. Training will take place between Monday, Sept. 28, and Thursday, Oct. 15. Voting place workers will be asked which days they wish to work when completing their application. Applications will be accepted from Aug. 17 to Sep. 8.

Position descriptions

Deputy returning officer

  • Count ballots and record the number received on the ballot account statement.
  • Issue ballots to voters after confirming voter eligibility with appropriate identification.
  • Assist voters in revising the voters' list through the application to amend the voters' list.
  • Administer the declaration of identity to voters who do not have appropriate identification.
  • Provide impartial instruction to voters on how to mark their ballot.
  • Assist in the setup and teardown of the voting place.

Deputy returning officers are required for both public voting places and special voting places to be held on Monday, Oct. 26, at long-term care facilities and retirement homes.

The rate of pay is $249 per day.

Machine operator

  • Pick up and return equipment to City Hall, including the ballot box.
  • Set up the tabulator and the accessible voting equipment at the opening of the voting place and pack away after the close of the voting place.
  • Set up and seal the ballot box prior to the opening of the voting place.
  • Ensure the tabulator is operating properly, that ballots are counted and that results are successfully counted throughout the day.
  • Aid and direct electors when there is an error or warning message on the tabulator.
  • Power down the tabulator at the end of each advance voting day, and on voting day, print off the required results tape.

The rate of pay is $235 per day.

Greeter/Demonstrator

  • Check that voters have their Voter Information Letter and required identification.
  • Determine whether a voter is at the correct voting place; if not, direct them to the correct one.
  • Regularly check the entrance to the voting place to ensure that voters can access it. 
  • If required, provide impartial instruction to voters on how to mark their ballot.
  • Assist in the setup and teardown of the voting place.

The rate of pay is $220 per day.
